WHERE AM I?
Totally confused about this domain? Wondering what in the world 'ayende' means? This section is for those who are interested in the domain, particularly it's namesake. If you're curious and would like a more in-depth description of the site, what it used to be, and what it is currently being used for, visit the Ancient Times and Current Institution sections.Well, welcome to Ayende.Net. Now, if I were to ask you to think of one question about the domain, I'd guess it might be along the lines of...what the heck does 'ayende' mean?
The word ayende comes from The Old Tongue, the ancient language used in Robert Jordan's series of books, The Wheel Of Time. Ayende is a word that means 'freedom' or 'release', and I have always found it a beautiful word. I chose this word specifically because of it's meaning; my website is my "release", so to speak, from the "real world". It's my slice of the wired, where I can choose to say and do whatever I want. It's my place where I can be entirely free.
Now that we know the 'why' of Ayende.Net, what about the 'how'? I chose this name literally as it was being bought. I decided on the fly that I didn't like my site's old name (Digital-Nights.Net), and wanted something shorter. I opened up a dictionary I have of The Old Tongue (I am very much a nerd) and began browsing for a new name. Ayende was one that caught my eye. What prompted me to look for a name of a site in The Old Tongue? Simple!
I just...love Wheel of Time.
